[Review] Break These Rules: 35 YA Authors on Speaking Up, Standing Out, and Being Yourself edited by Luke Reynolds

July 28, 2013

Break These Rules:.  Reynolds, Luke (editor). 224 pages. $12.95.  Chicago Review Press.  September 1, 2013.    9781613747841.  I am always on the lookout for good contemporary nonfiction for my middle school readers and this is just the book for both boys and girls…a collection of essays by popular young adult and children authors that encourages today’s youth to break out of the box and be yourself on your own personal path blazed by you just for you.

If you’re a girl, you should strive to look like the model on the cover of a magazine. If you’re a boy, you should play sports andbe good at them. If you’re smart, you should immediately go to college after high school, and get a job that makes you rich. Above all, be normal.

Right?

Wrong, say 35 leading middle grade and young adult authors. Growing up is challenging enough; it doesn’t have to be complicated by convoluted, outdated, or even cruel rules, both spoken and unspoken.  – publisher’s comment
